Before this anime begins its inevitable fall into harem land, and me more than likely dropping it, Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai offered probably one of the best moments of any anime this year, and this is from only its first episode. Suffice it to say, the comedy was great, and the characters are far more relatable than most are likely willing to admit. All those moments aside, the best moment from this episode was its ending. At this moment, anime viewers have no idea what Rikka’s home life is like, or why she is acting like she is the master of the universe. We can only assume, but we can’t know.
And that is what Yuuta realizes. In stunning contrast to almost every other harem ever conceived, we have a main character, who at least for now, seems to have some level of intelligence. Since Yuuta realizes all of the potential problems Rikka may have, he relents, repeats one of his dark dragon master lines, and puts all of his old stuff back into his room. At this point, its hard to believe that is what Yuuta wanted to do. But, and I think that the show did a great job of showing this, he realizes that this is likely all Rikka has, and if he had disavowed her choices, he would have essentially punched her in the stomach, emotionally.
This series may go in one of several different directions, but it would be nice if were able to see some more moments like this. Suffice it to say, the “chemistry”, if you will, between this series’ two main characters is top notch, and is more than enough reason to give this show a chance.
